The health effects of wireless radiation on our children is still being studied, but the effects of too much “screen time” can have long term consequences. It is important to understand that children are not just tiny adults. Children’s bodies have some notable differences that can cause the effects of radiation exposure to be even more severe. First a child’s skull is thinner than an adult’s skull. Second the tissues of a child’s head absorb more energy than those in an adult head. This includes both the bone marrow of the skull as well as the tissues in the eyes. The reality is that our children are more vulnerable to damage from wireless radiation exposure than adults due to their developing body systems and weaker defenses.
Studies have shown that wireless technology has serious health risks. Wi-Fi and all radio-frequency radiation have been documented on the World Health Organization’s Class 2B List of Possible Human Carcinogens since May 2011. This classification is based on research showing increased brain cancer in heavy users of electronic devices normally described as using a device more than 30 minutes per day over a period of 10 years. These studies conducted on the general population were not directed at children. However, we know that due to children’s physiology, they are likely to be at greater risk. Children’s stem cells are more affected by microwave radiation and at this time no studies have shown that microwave radiation exposure or continuous exposure from cell phones, cell towers, cordless phones, Wi-Fi routers, baby monitors is safe for kids.
Research conducted by Dr. Lennart Hardell and his team at Orebro University in Sweden showed that children who start using a mobile phone as teenagers develop 4 to 8 times more brain cancers than those who began to use phones later in life. Experimental studies are showing children experiencing significant neurological changes from exposure to microwave radiation levels that currently meet FCC guidelines. This indicates the current FCC guidelines are likely insufficient to protect children and in desperate need of review.
The health risks to children of wireless radiation is very real. Several major epidemiologic studies have documented evidence that long-term mobile phone use is directly associated with an increased risk of glioma (a type of malignant brain tumour) and acoustic neuroma (a nonmalignant tumour of the nerve that connects the ear to the brain). Additional studies have shown that tumour risks are greater on the side of the head where the mobile phone is predominantly used. While brain tumours have a long latency period of between 5-50 years, cancer registries in the United States as well as several other countries are now showing increased rates of brain cancer. Sadly, younger persons who have begun to use cell phones as teenagers are at the highest risk. As more and more children grow up in environments polluted by so much wireless radiation it is projected these types of cancers will become increasingly more common, in adults of younger ages.
